the power of habitI received a wonderful couple of questions from a client this morning:
“does energy healing heal unmet needs? I know it heals woundings but can it meet unmet needs by unfreezing stuck emotions and replacing energies that fill the needs for the younger me?”
And my answers to those questions are yes and yes.  If it were not for my understanding of the power and structure of habits, I would have said YES and YES!

Sometimes a shift can be so complete in a healing session that we never go back to the behaviours that old trapped emotions caused us to engage in. More often though, the groundwork is achieved energetically in a healing session, but we also need to maintain and build upon that work.  This is because of the structure and power of habits.  Our subconscious mind is programmed to use thousands of routines it has stored which are known as “least effort pathways”.  So, the old habits that we built to compensate for our unmet needs can still be stored as habits even when the wound that created the need for our habitual behaviours has been healed.

Healing also provides us with the opportunity for more awareness.  So when a situation arises that gives our subconscious mind the signal that begins our old habit loop, we sometimes have the joyful experience of recognising our old patterns and knowing that we can make a choice.  Sometimes though, especially when we are threatened or frightened, our habit loops are so powerfully engrained that the programming of our subconscious mind wins out.  It can all be over in a flash: before we know it our subconscious mind is dealing with the situation we have encountered in the way it knows best.  It has instigated the behaviours mapped out and stored as a least effort pathway, whether or not that behaviour is still appropriate to our present circumstances.

We need to be ready for this.  Sometimes practicing awareness and having healing is not powerful enough.  When it comes to our deepest and most damaging habits we can use the considerable ability of our conscious mind to work WITH the subconscious mind to reprogram our learned routines.

Firstly we need to find out what our triggers are, i.e. the cues that start the behaviour loops that we wish to change.

And secondly, we need to design a new routine (a new set of actions) that we can follow when this cue is encountered in life.  The aim here is to create new habits that are designed around getting our unmet needs satisfied in a positive way.  We can then close the behaviour loop initiated by the original cue by carrying out a new routine that takes us to our reward.  And with the newly programmed behaviour loop in place, the reward is something that can be enjoyed and achieved without sabbotaging ourselves, or hurting others.

I am currently working with a lot of my clients in this way.  I combine the energy healing and release of old energy patterns with exercises to help them understand the structure of the habits they have in place.  We then use the conscious mind to work in partnership with the subconscious mind so that the healing achieved in our work together is robust and applicable in real life.

If you would like to read more about this topic, I highly recommend getting hold of a copy of this book:  The Power of Habit called Charles Duhigg.  And does the approach work? As Mr Duhigg explains in the book, the technique turns out to be the principle that has been at the heart of Alcoholics Anonymous since it first began.  And there are very few organisations in the world that have been as successful as they have when it comes to creating and maintaining behavioural change.
